Imagine waiting to be executed – how would you react to the approaching doom? Fontaine, a French resistance fighter held in prison by the Germans during World War II who knows he will be killed, does everything he can to regain his freedom – and in the process gives hope back to his fellow prisoners. This is a tense, stripped-down film, mostly taking place in a small cell - and as a result, much of the information that both Fontaine and the audience receive comes from sound alone.
