Don’t expect a big chunk of Chaucer here – although there are quotes from the 14th century English writer’s work, this isn’t an adaptation of one of his stories. It is, however, about an oddly assorted group travelling like pilgrims through the Kent countryside – only the backdrop is World War II, and British parents are worried about their daughters getting swept off their feet by American troops. It’s an unusual film, one that makes rural England look and seem both stranger and more beautiful than you could ever imagine.

Fascinating facts

A Canterbury Tale’s co-writer and producer Emerich Pressburger wasn’t allowed to travel to Kent for the filming, because as a Hungarian he was classed as an “enemy alien” during World War II.
