Actor Robert De Niro’s enjoyable debut as a director is a compelling and beautifully drawn tale of love and loyalty. De Niro stars as a bus-driver trying to prevent his streetwise nine year-old son from falling under the glamorous spell of a local gang boss, who the boy has witnessed committing a murder yet refuses to identify. Influenced by De Niro’s mentor Martin Scorsese in subject matter and finely judged use of music, this is a stint behind the camera that De Niro has yet to better.
