A beautifully crafted masterpiece of a broken mind. Russell Crowe is outstanding as mathematical genuis John Nash. Played with utter devotion, Nash goes from genius to broken man in a tragic yet brilliant tale. As Nash becomes a prominent figure in maths, he is called up by what appears to be the CIA to use his unbelivable ability of breaking the most complex codes, however all is not as it seems. Paul Bettany plays Charles, who pops in and out of Nash’s life yet there always seems to be something strange about him. Stellar performances from Jennifer Connelly as Nash’s loving yet long suffering wife and Ed Harris as the head of CIA Parcher, this film was rightly awarded Oscars and is a must see for anyone who saw Gladiator and thought that it was Crowe at his best.

Fascinating facts

Although Hollywood has often remade classic French films, The Beat That My Heart Skipped is one of the few examples of a French director re-making an American movie – in this case the 1978 drama, Fingers.

John Nash visited the set, and Russell Crowe said later that he had been fascinated by the way he moved his hands, and tried to do the same thing in the movie.
