Based on a true story, this is a touching tale of friendship and loneliness. Helene Hanff is a New York woman with a passion for literature who sees an advert for a second-hand bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road in London that will send her books for a reasonable price. She begins a correspondence with the store’s owner, Frank Doel - and soon their letters are covering far more than you might expect to pass between a customer and bookseller. But while Helene is single, Frank is married with children - and although they write to each other religiously over 20 years, they seem destined never to meet...

Fascinating facts
The real bookstore, Marks & Co., is now a wine bar. There is a plaque on the building commemorating the store, Helene Hanff's book and the movie. Today (2003), 84 Charing Cross Road is a bar called All Bar One.
There is no longer a bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road. Since it closed the premises has been, amongst other things, a record shop and an All Bar One wine bar.
