This stunningly intense drama, directed and co-written by the artist Steve McQueen, deals with the protests of imprisoned Provisional IRA members, who wished to be treated as political prisoners, that led to a hunger strike in 1981. In long, beautifully composed takes, McQueen focuses on one inmate, Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender), who was the first to die and, as a result, became a Republican martyr. The film does not flinch from showing the brutality of the prison system and the physical effects of the strike, as well as opening a debate on its ethics and effectiveness.

Beautifully shot and extremely moving. Reveals the brutal reality of life in the Maze without glamorising the terrorists, with sympathy for the characters very carefully balanced. Michael Fassbender's performance as Sands is breathtaking, as is the scene with the priest. Watched the film months ago - still reflecting.

Personally, I thought this film was interesting as it was a part of history that I had very little knowledge of. However, I didn't like the violence that was shown, even though it was fully in keeping with the plot line. It's certainly for older viewers due to the very long dialogue and slow pace.
