Shattering drama about an alcoholic writer's four-day drinking binge in New York, as he struggles to overcome writer's block. Director Billy Wilder deliberately cast silky-smooth matinee idol Ray Milland as the central character because he thought the audience would find it more shocking to see him with the shakes - and Milland duly delivers a brilliant performance that is both frightening and pathetic. One of the first films to deal with alcoholism in a frank and intelligent manner.
