This film is an example of the kind of social-realist dramas (also known as "kitchen-sink" dramas) that found popularity in the late 1950s and 60s. The genre often dealt with gritty issues affecting Britain at the time and this is no exception. The film follows a young, working-class man who has been sent to a borstal, where he is awarded certain privileges thanks to his talent for cross-country running. As he prepares for an important race against a local public school, he must decide whom he is really running for - himself or the ambitious borstal governor.

I enjoyed the film, as I did when I first saw it many years ago as a teenager. It was not the right choice though for my second screening at FilmClub. Our club members are not familiar with black and white films and so it was perhaps too much of an adventure too soon. As students were restless we only watched 50 minutes of the film and spent the remainder of our time discussing the film, adding our views to the FilmClub website and selecting films that our club members would like to see on the bigger screen. I will reintroduce them to black and white films...eventually!

If there was a nought rating I'd give it that! I was really bored especially as it was in black and white plus we all agreed to finish the film before the ending because we didn't enjoy it. We ate cakes instead!
