There's been any number of movies before about inspirational teachers working in schools in deprived areas, and some of them are classics. But in none of them until now has the teacher been brilliant, committed - and also struggling with a drug problem. This intense, compelling film is built around two extraordinary performances - from Ryan Gosling as the teacher who is intelligent, dedicated and yet at the same time a complete personal disaster, and from Shareeka Epps as the student who becomes his friend.

An odd teacher, students, basketball and some unsavoury characters all blend together like an onion and banana smoothie. I love marmite but I hated this.

This is the best film I have seen in a long time. The plot was well constructed and tackled lots of issues surrounding growing up and the influences of drugs. I thought that the acting was amazing and the symbolism used was brilliant! The film left a few questions unanswered but I think this furthered the marvel of Half Nelson. There were some really emotional moments and moments of harsh realisation which pulled on the heart strings! This film is all about the friendship between a teacher and a student made poignant by the fact that there are many obstacles which come between them. I would definitely recommend this film.
