Having spent their high school years sneering at their fellow students, Enid and Rebecca spend the summer after graduation looking for new targets for their wisecracks. But the question is, outside of school, does that kind of harsh humour make sense anymore? The girls, played by Thora Birch and Scarlet Johansson, are smart, funny and have their own sense of style - but are also just a little bit heartless. But life as a young adult, rather than a schoolkid, has a habit of making people look at life differently - and that's just what happens to both Enid and Rebecca in this terrific and unusual comedy.

I did not enjoy the film.
It was boring, hard to follow and uninteresting.
I would definately not reccomend it - it wasn't funny at all.

That I find this film quite hard to describe is a testament to its uniqueness. Although coversions from comic-book to film (which this is) have become quite common this is far from the action-packed likes of "Spiderman" or "The Dark Knight". Instead of costumed superheroes, we are given Enid and Rebecca - two determined outsiders who sneer their way through life with a practiced ennui and, trying to fill the void left by the end of high-school, amuse themselves by playing a cruel joke on a middle-aged loner. The consequences of this act form the main story of the film which explores themes of loneliness and alienation as well as self-discovery and personal growth.

Although their characters are exaggerated, excellent acting from Johansson and Birch renders them believable and sympathetic. The direction perfectly eveokes the "Ghost World" of the film's title as although the world portrayed is full of life and colour there is a pervading sense of emptiness throughout, perfectly complimented by the soundtrack.

This film was not very good. It didn't have a good story line and it was quite boring. It was a very sad and girly film.

The story is focused on the life of two teenage friends, Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), They are both really eager to get a job and move in together, but it all starts to go wrong when one of them gets what they want and the other one doesnt.
Director: Terry Zwigoff he was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. terry had loads of other jobs before he was a film director such as musician and shipping clarke.
Terry was also the writter of the film working allongside Daniel Clowes the comic book writer. Enid (Thora Birch) was born on march 11th in 1982 and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) born on November 22, 1984. To me this film was truley, truley amazingly wierd. this film just didnt seem good or funny it just wasnt my type of film. besides the swearing it was a bit complicated and grown up for me to watch. To me this film really reminded me of " the boy in the striped pajamas" because in that film it had two best friends that were both in bother because of the WW2 and in ghost world they were both in bother because of the jobs and houses witch in our days is like WW2. The both films have sad and confusing moments in them witch made me remember there similaritese. This film over all was ok but not the best film i have ever seen. the good bits in it was were enid and the middle aged geek made friends. the not so interesting bits in it was were when they were all in moods and arguing all the time. i feel sad that this film didnt reach out to me like other films like avatar and toy story. I have to say that a really famouse film director that likes all films would probable fall asleep in the cinema if they were watching it. The word i would use to summon it all up is "cheesy".

This film was not at all what I expected from the brief outline on the FIlmClub website. I loved Ghost World (2001). Although totally irresponsible, high school graduate Enid (movingly portrayed Thora Birch) is a thoroughly sympathetic character, as is middle-aged nerd Seymour (brilliantly played by Steve Buscemi) whom she forges a rlationship with. I could identify with these so-called "social misfits" and their response to the "real" world which the rest of us inhabit and I admired their uncompromising honesty. There is an inevitability to the events that unfold for all three main protagonists. Unfortunately, the ending is something of a copout but I was delighted when a number of our film club members broke into spontaneous applause at the end confirming that this is a film that people of all ages can relate to and take something away from.

this was a really good film but I dont understand why this is called ghost world because it does not even have a ghost in it or even a word about a ghost this film was directed by Terry Zwigoff and one of the girls is a punk and she look like a teacher in my school but not with the green hair and the girl has a friend and the film uses really strong language and the cast is Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Thora Birch, Brad Renfro, Illeana Douglas
