Director Stanley Kubrick offers us three Oscar-nominated performances for the price of one in his savage satire on the power squabbles of the Cold War. When America accidentally launches a nuclear attack on Russia, it's up to a bemused British airman (brilliantly played by Peter Sellers) to save the day. Meanwhile, the US president (once more played by Sellers) is getting some very strange advice from an ex-Nazi scientist (yes, Sellers again) with a doomsday fixation. The result is demented, nightmarish - and without doubt the funniest war movie ever made.

This film is brilliant. with a subject like the cold war during the 1960's the temptation of making it propaganda. entirely supporting America and making fun of the Russians. but this film didn't do this, it took a step back and viewed it as a whole - a mess, both sides are at war for all most humorous reasons, with world destruction laughably close for no reason. a very comical and poignant film.

Stanley Kubrick, whilst commonly known as one of the greatest directors of all time, is a very hit and miss guy. Whilst he has made masterpieces such as A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and the first half of Full Metal Jacket, he has also let us down with stuff like Eyes Wide Shut and the second half of Full Metal Jacket. But right there in the middle of all this uncertainty is Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. One of the most famous comedies of all time, starring Peter Sellers, Peter Sellers, and Peter Sellers. This film is fantastic. A great film to watch, with a great plot and easily Kubrick's best. There's just one problem: It's not funny. Alot of people describe it as the greatest comedy ever made, but it really isn't that funny. But that doesn't stop it from being a great film. It's really worth watching for Peter Sellers, who stars as a British airman, the American president and a former Nazi German scientist, Dr. Strangelove. Overall, whilst not the funniest of films, definetley one of Kubrick's best. 4 Stars

To create a comedy about the ease in which humans can bring about doomsday is an incredibly brave decision even in this day and age, yet alone amidst the height of the Cold War. "Dr Strangelove or: How I Learnt to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" was released a mere two years after the Cuban Missile Crisis; no wonder then that this insight into the true insanity of the Cold War made audiences so uneasy at the time.

The storyline is that a renegade General within the American ranks orders a nuclear strike against Russia, which cannot be ordered back due to a clause that grants Generals the right to launch a nuclear strike without the Presidents consent if they feel the threat of strike from Russia is imminent. While the President and his associates try desperately to contact the Bombers to cancel the attack, they learn that the Russians have created a Doomsday machine that will launch nuclear missiles all over the world if a single nuclear missile strikes Russia, granting them the ultimate deterrent. Unfortunately they failed to inform the world about the machine in time.

It is a true testament to the genius of Stanley Kubrick (and of course all those associated with the project) that this film is completely insane and arguably goofy in its characters and storyline, yet is so disturbingly believable. As a comedy it contains some of the best lines in film history ("Gentlemen you can't fight in here, this is the war room!") each coming at an incredibly fast pace. However the true comedic genius comes from each characters acceptance of this horrific scenario as the norm, as well as being only concerned in their relative outcome compared to their enemy.

Peter Seller's performances as Dr Strangelove (a Nazi scientist now working for the USA), Captain Mandrake and President Muffley are what really steal the show in terms of acting. each performance is so beautifully suited to each role, especially in the case of Dr Strangelove, who adds a brilliant sense of surrealism and absurdity to the back drop of nuclear destruction.

Stanley Kubrick definitely adds his own beautiful style in the direction of this film. Each scene is perfectly crafted in its lighting and camera perspective, granting this film a visual flare that is rarely seen in comedies.

"Dr Strangelove" is perhaps one of the most important comedies ever made, in fact probably one of the most important films ever made. In essence this is the perfect dark comedy. No other film will make you laugh and shudder at the same time quite like this.

    A***
THE STANDARD WHICH ALL FILMS ARE BASED ON
The perfection in this film is awe inspiring, from directing which is just stunning,
and acting in the form of Peter Sellers which is world class.
This is thought provoking a valuable history lesson to all of us which could very
almost have been true (sad to say) and all kids (and adults) should see it.

This is a Peter Sellers at his best - manic, mad and very funny. However, these are words that are not often written when discussing a film about total nuclear destruction. Kubrick highlights the pointless nature of MAD and lack of leadership in the Cold War. A classic cold war film that we should all watch!
