This Japanese "anime" is the deeply moving tale of a teenage boy and his young sister fighting to survive during World War II. Their home is destroyed, their father is a soldier who is away fighting, and their mother is killed by a bomb. At first they stay with an aunt - but she treats them badly, so they travel to the countryside where they find a cave to shelter in. The country is still under attack, and there is little food to be found - but the light of the fireflies they capture to illuminate their cave provides a rare moment of joy. Be warned, this is a harsh and haunting story, and while incredibly powerful and rewarding is far from typical chirpy cartoon fare.
