This Japanese "anime" is the deeply moving tale of a teenage boy and his young sister fighting to survive during World War II. Their home is destroyed, their father is a soldier who is away fighting, and their mother is killed by a bomb. At first they stay with an aunt - but she treats them badly, so they travel to the countryside where they find a cave to shelter in. The country is still under attack, and there is little food to be found - but the light of the fireflies they capture to illuminate their cave provides a rare moment of joy. Be warned, this is a harsh and haunting story, and while incredibly powerful and rewarding is far from typical chirpy cartoon fare. (Grave Of The Fireflies was originally made in Japanese, but has been dubbed into English).

We watched this film recently in film club and I have to say at first I wasn't a fan of the film, until I found out that all of the story was true! I really enjoy history and had only heard about the war recently, the story went into great detail, scavenging and losing loved ones, it was very moving but unfortunatley I really dislike anime films.
    Overall 3 stars.

I found this to be a hugely powerful film. This incredibly sad piece is moving on a number of ways. Death, death and mor death. I did apricate how effective the film as but a wouldn't watch it again because it is very sad!

Grave of the Fireflies is single-handedly the most depressing film i have ever seen. UNLESS YOU WANT TO KILL YOUR SELF DO NOT WATCH THIS !!!! I really wished i hadnt watched this as it gave me depressing thoughts for nearly a week :(. The story is about two Children in war time Japan who lose their mother and have to fight to survive through the tough times that the war brings them. The main reason it is so depressing is the recurring theme of death. Nearly everyone dies in the film.It got its point across but it was too sad to enjoy.

Not much is needed to be said about this film other than it contains a repetitive theme of sadness and leaves you depressed after watching this motion picture. Although on the positive side of things it does bring to mind just how hard things were back in the days of the world wars. It really shows just how lucky we are to live in the generation that we do, with the mobile phones and computers, not forgetting all of the gaming systems which me may be inclined to invest in, and how we see the two orphaned children which all they have to entertain themselves is a tyre swing which they had built and each other.

“Grave of the Fireflies” is a touching film about the struggle of two siblings to survive in the aftermath of Japan’s surrender in World War II. These two siblings are teenage brother Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, whom he dotes on like she was his own child. After their home and mother are lost in a visually terrifying bomb attack, they travel to stay with an aunt who not only mistreats them but is visibly scornful of their staying with her.

The animation is quite saddening, to be perfectly honest. Not due to its quality – it is of course, a brilliant film by the acclaimed Studio Ghibli – but due to its heartbreaking message; war, no matter how prepared you are for it, no matter how big a country or a group you are, no matter how much power you hold over your opponents, always equals destruction. And it’s a fundamental aspect of life, ironically, that destruction is only a stone on the pavement to death. Perhaps this is the film’s message; the pointlessness of war and the horror it brings to people. Or maybe it is how even families can turn on each other – no matter age, or gender, or closeness, or whatever – in that infinite struggled that is to live. Who knows? It’s how you see the film.

“Grave of the Fireflies” is yet another amazing film to have been churned out by Studio Ghibli, and if you watch the movie then it is not surprise that it’s considered by many as one of the greatest anti-war – and overall, one of the greatest – movies of all time. I would recommend this film to both anime fans and those who wish to see how badly the Second World War affected people who weren’t even soldiers, or medics, or leaders, or politicians…but children. This film deserves a full five stars. 5/5!
