In 1989, Alex lives in communist East Germany with his beloved mother, Christiane, who is a staunch follower of the party. But Alex joins the uprising against the state, and is attacked by the police - the shock of which sends Christiane into a coma. While she's unconscious, the Berlin Wall falls, and as Germany unites, the former "German Democratic Republic" is no more. When she finally awakes, her doctors tell Alex that another shock could kill her, so he must keep up the illusion that nothing has changed. But it isn't easy, as the re-unified Germany is a very different place. So Alex must resort to ever-more complicated (and often very amusing) ploys to protect his mother from the truth. This is a bright and witty take on Germany's recent history.

Going into this film with trepidation I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not usually a fan of foreign film, I prefer English ones, and ones that are in the action/sci-fi/western genre. The film is based around a woman who went into a coma before the fall of the Berlin Wall and awakes to a new Germany whilst her family and friends try to pretend that nothing has happened. What I liked about this film is the length at which the mothers family went to to keep her from learning the truth so as to protect her from losing the Germany that she so loved. What I did not like however was how there was no mention of Hasselhoff at all in the film. A family fun film which shows that if a son loves his mother enough, he will do anything for her

A film based around the fall of the Berlin wall, and not a Hasselhoff in sight. Charming, heartwarming and downright funny, this film is essentially a tale of how much a son is willing to do to keep his mother happy, whilst also a reminder that the last time England were in a World Cup semifinal, Germany was only just unified.

This is absolutely brilliant. I enjoyed every minute of it, simply fabulous. Every bit seemed very real, I could totally believe it. To tell the story with the interesting character of Alex was a wisely chosen perspective. And it was so so funny, the gags were so good, but there was also time for a little bit of friendship, romance, and fights. Just the overall mixture of everything life seems to be, fabulous! I absolutely adore and admire German actor Daniel Bruehl, he is amazing, and this film was no exception, well done. Florian Lukas was stunning in my opinion as well. I am German, but I wasn’t yet born when the wall in Berlin fell and I live in the west, and often when I think about it, it is hard to imagine for me that it all really happened. The idea seems so unreal, in some way. I liked the way in which this idea of “culture shock” was portrayed in the film, two countries, next to each other, but I suppose it was like a clash between two different worlds. I can understand why some people at first didn’t really like the idea of a reunited Germany, but I’m glad it happened. I mean, if I lived back in these days, in Eastern Germany, I don’t know how I’d react to the downfall of the wall and the whole DDR, I don’t know- probably I would be quite suspicious to the changes I had to expect, and accept. I think it is hard to see how fast everything that you believe in and everything that you identify with can vanish. That is what Goodbye Lenin wants to tell us, that you can never be sure that your ideals are the correct ones, but that the show must go on…- today there is only one Germany, but when you take a closer look, there is still a lot of division, the real process of reunion needs much more than 20 years. We are on a good way, I think, but there’s still a lot to do! Goodbye Lenin makes you laugh and think, and that is so brilliant. Watch it, you’ll have fun and learn more about Germany’s past in a very entertaining way! :)

Goodbye Lenin is a fantastic tribute to the transformation of East Germany with the arrival of Capatalism. Hilarious but heart warming as Alex must turn back the clock to save his mother, but to his dismay change is inevitable and unforgiving
