A highly original and brilliant animated portrait of a young girl's coming of age in revolutionary Iran, adapted from an acclaimed graphic novel by exiled Iranian artist Marjane Satrapi, who co-directed the movie too. The story follows "Marjane", a smart and strong-willed girl whose life is forever changed when the Shah of Iran is overthrown by the Islamic Revolution of 1979. While far from being supporters of the Shah, Marjane's left-wing parents find their lives even harder under the new regime - and Marjane herself finds it impossible to adapt, rebelling in a country where rebellion increasingly has no place, especially for girls. With English subtitles.

PLEASE BE AWARE: After ordering Persepolis the disc you will receive will be marked as being a 15 certificate - however, this relates to the extra features on the DVD and not the film itself, which is certified with the BBFC as a 12.

FILMCLUB has consulted the BBFC, and their guidance is that as long as a club leader screens only the film (and not additional features or audio commentaries etc), Persepolis can be treated as a 12 certificate in a school setting.

What you say

  • A really engaging and informative film. The characters are really human and there is a surprising amount of humour. Thoughtful and though-provoking.

This film is about a young girls life story growing up in Iran. She has to go through war and death and standing up for herself. This film was not what I exspected it to be it was absolutly brilliant and I like the fact that it was in colour in the airport. It is amazing how the director showed a documentry in a cartoon. This film gets 10 thumbs ups from me!

I thought the film was good because it was in black and white and i loved how the animations were detailed drawings. I thought the girl was a very strong character as she studd up for what she wanted.

I thought persepolis was ok because:

    (1) It was in black and white :( ...
    (2) It had a good story :) ...
    (3) Bad language :/ ...

Overall I would rate this film 6/10 mainly because it was in black and white and it has quite simple animation... :-)
