In nineteenth-century Arizona, debt-ridden Civil War veteran Dan Evans is struggling to survive on his drought-ravaged ranch. However, fate intervenes when he volunteers to transport newly captured outlaw Ben Wade to the nearest railway town to make the 3:10 train bound for Yuma prison. So begins a dangerous trek through harsh open country, during which Wade regularly tries to psyche out Evans. Worse still, the criminal’s old gang is in pursuit - meaning it’s only a matter of time before a violent showdown ensues. A thoughtful, modern western that’s tautly paced and powerfully performed.

With its amazing action sequences and brilliant stunts, this film is truly a treat and includes all the ingrediants for a 5 star film. With the excellent scenery and superb costumes and props, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale give of un-critical performances, helped by the supporting actors. The storyline and acting put together makes the best western i have seen in recent years. A fully enjoyable film.

Fascinating facts

The short story upon which the film is based was published in Dime Western Magazine in 1953. The action begins in the hotel room with a deputy sheriff guarding a 21 year old robber.

The shoot of 3:10 To Yuma was hampered by a freak storm that blanketed the film’s supposedly drought-struck town with nearly two feet of snow.
