When an idealistic scout leader from Montana is recruited by two spineless and greedy legislators as the state's new senator, he arrives in Washington full of plans and is dazzled by his surroundings. Soon, he comes face-to-face with the reality of widespread corruption and cynicism in politics - but is determined to hang onto his principles. This is one of the greatest films to come out of Hollywood's golden era, and will certainly make you think about how much your government is actually doing for you...

I have to admit that to begin with, I wasn't convinced by this film. James Stewart played the innocent character of the boy scout leader, Jefferson smith, who is given the title of senator, not knowing what the job will entail,. He played the part of the naive young man very convincingly so much so that I decided to persevere with the film.In the end I found the film very interesting and thought that it really revealed the corruption in politics. The film really spoke to me about the importance of standing up for what you believe in and as the character himself says "Lost causes are the best kind to fight for". I felt this was a great message to come from a film, it will speak to many different people in all walks of life.

When Filmclub sent me this film I didn't think too much of it. In fact I turned my nose up at it because it was in black and white. I eventually succumbed to watching it when I was off school one day, and once I started watching it, it was very hard to stop! My first impression was very wrong and I fell in love with the Character of Mr Smith, and laughed a lot at the funny bits! It starts with a politician recieving a phone call in the middle of the night to say that the town's senate was dead! A search for a new senate begins. Then one night at dinner, the politician's children tells him of a scout leader, who would be perfect for the job. Mr Smith is soon appointed with the job. He is whisked of to Washington and soon wandersof to see the sights. As an innocent senate, he has absoloutey no idea what is going on behind the scenes and when he tries to pass a bill, some certain people are doing anything to try to stop him. A fantastic film, and as the election is coming up, a great film to watch that would do with Democracy. I highly reccomend this film and you will fall in love with Mr Smith. If you don't I suggest you open your eyes and ears and watch it again.
