A classic tale of two souls who meet each other only briefly - but have a effect on one another deep enough to change them forever. Once popular actor Bob Harris now does cheesy adverts for money. He flies to Tokyo for one such ad and meets up with a bored, lonely newlywed, Charlotte, in town with her busy photographer husband. The unlikely duo form a strong, emotional bond after several fun nights out in the bright, bustling Japanese city, in this stylish and hugely popular movie with stand-out performances from stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.

This film for me was perfect. I loved every minute of it. The bustling consumer fuelled Tokyo is them most unlikely place for these two charecters to meet, however as the film goes on it is easy to see why and how they become freinds.

Bill Murray plays the part of a middle aged actor going through a mid-life crisis, Scarlett Johansson is a young photographers wife bored with following her husband around the city.

They meet in the hotel bar and become freinds through their mutual feelings of lonliness. Bill Murray rediscovers his youth through the girl as he goes to clubs and visits freinds of hers. He becomes part of their scene dining in sushi bars and going back to their modern apartments.

It comes as a shock to him therefore when he has to travel home the next day. Their separation is too short so when he sees her walking down a street he asks the taxi driver to stop. He goes and talks to her, he then hugs her and leaves walking away backwards. It is at this point in the film that the audience understand it is the first time he has felt any unity or freindship whilst in Tokyo. As they walk apart you can see their hearts breaking however the whispered words remain unheard and the viewer takes comfort in the characters' secret.

I loved this film, and would reccomend to anyone, i think it will have a greater impact on older generations though as it is certainly difficult to place yourself in Bill Murrays shoe's especially at a young age. A great film, worth the watch even if you don't enjoy it and it's modern soundtrack hits the nail on the head in making it an all time favourite for me!

A common theme mentioned between the couple in this film is not being able to go to sleep. For me, this film creates the exact opposite effect. I was extremely bored and the constant filler shots were tedious and time-consuming. The only redeeming factors of this film were the acting and the occasional funny scene with Bill Murray's character as he adjusts to the culture shock he experiences in Tokyo. Otherwise ,I found this film yawn-worthy and I could not see how this film was rated so highly by other critics. I do not plan on watching it again.

To be honest i didn't enjoy this film. I didn't like the plot and ending was bit rubbish. On the plus side the soundtrack was great and i found it quite humurous.

I was really enthusiastic about seeing this film for a long time. Its started when I heard it being compared to Jason Reitman's "Up in the Air", which I would argue one of the best films of the decade, So going in I worried that it wouldn't live up to the hype. So did it deliver? Well let me first start off by saying that Sofia Coppola really broke the mould with this one. What she did in the writing of this screenplay was bold, she defied every Hollywood Rom/Com cliché while maintaining a outstandingly strong story arc. While many directors would look at this script with a draconian perspective and tear out all those wonderful silent, contemplative and often retrospective moments to replace them with pithy slap stick humour Sofia Coppola lets them run and run. Bill Murray is exquisite, its his best performance to date and Scarlett Johansson looks like she was born for this role. Although the screenplay is great and the direction is near perfect this is clearly a performance piece and it defiantly delivers. Where 9 out of 10 writers would have the two protagonists sleep together or decide they weren't going to sleep together but instead go home to try and work on there imperfect marriages this film doesn't conform but instead leaves you cold. It's uncompromising and very intelligent. Coppola uses Tokyo as a character in itself, she makes it intimidating and quirky and uses it to really show the culture difference which is a huge theme in this movie. Another, maybe redundant, theme in this film is literally the inability to communicate and how it makes people feel lost, this is why when the two protagonists who can communicate forge an very tight bond in a short space of time. In conclusion I wouldn't say this film is quite as good as "Up in the Air" however it is original, clever and very well preformed.

Lost in Translation portrays brilliantly the solitude of the two characters put against the magnificently vast background of Tokyo city isolating them in its glowing lights. The film entails their emotional journey which takes place through discovery in such a strange environment as Tokyo. It also shows a different picture of the 'glamorous' life of the fashion and advertising industry.
This film is one of my personal favourites and I definitely give it 5 stars.
