Based on the famous novel by Barry Hines, Kes: A Kestrel for a Knave, the stunning yet bleak film version centres around Billy Casper - a young lad who seems to have nothing going for him. He's picked on by his teachers and classmates, he's tormented by his older brother, and he's ignored by his mother. But then, all alone in the world, Billy finds a kestrel hawk - and manages to befriend and tame it.

What you say

  • Outstanding! A great film which captures the experiences of a school boy in the 1960s. I really loved the football match!

A nice concept of a film, but yet another depressing story (My Girl). The ending is really odd with how it just cuts to the credits as if was too long for the studio or something. I didn't think that the boy was a very good actor. I dont think I would recommend it to anyone.

I remember this film as black and white and being a true classic ... I was wrong on both.
    First its colour.
Whilst theres some great albeit dark camera work, and a great narrative, the direction leaves a little to be desired, but I loved the look and feel of the 'fly on the wall' was great.
Theres fine supporting acting from the likes of Colin Welland but the young chap playing the central character and the owner of Kes, has to be one of the worst I've seen in many a year,
The ending too is a bit aabrupt.http://www.filmclub.org/film/add-review/2852/preview

Billy Casper is 15 years old and has a job delivering news papers to the people in his neighboorhood. He has blacky-brown hair, brown eyes and white skin as white as snow. His favrite thing is reading the news paper comics. Billy goes to school and never brings his PE kit when it is time for football. Then he has to wear the ones a pair of baggy shorts and trainers that are to big. POOR BILLY!
Billy has a older step brother that he shares a room with and his brother beats Billy. His mum workes all day and goes out at night so does his brother so Billy gets left alone. Billy has to get hi9s brother up at 6:00am , go back to sleep and one hour later he has to wake up.After school Billy goes to a form and finds a Kestral nesting in one of the towers. Then he goes to a book shop and steals a book called Folconney. He reads how to train a Kestral and Billy names the Kestral KEZ. This film is a very sad film.
