Casablanca, Morocco is the place to be in early 1942 - it's where you just might be able to get hold the papers necessary for safe passage out of Nazi-controlled north Africa to the United States - papers which end up in the safekeeping of gruff American Rick Blaine (played by the legendary Humphrey Bogart), owner of Rick's Cafe. One night, a beautiful woman named Ilsa who once broke his heart walks into his bar - so will Rick be able to put aside his feelings to help her (and her husband) escape?

Fascinating Facts

Famously, Humphrey Bogart never actually said 'Play it gain Sam,' - the catchphrase synonymous with the film.

This film started out in Paris and then moved to Casablanca. The story is about a man and woman who are in love, she tells him that she can't be with him anymore so he moves to Casablanca.
The film was good and I enjoyed watching it, only problem was, it was in black & white.
I would rate this film 6/10.

I was reading some of the reviews on Filmclub for this and my first question was, why does everyone want colour? Its not good to colourise black and white, it won’t help the sound, and the costumes and cinematography are designed specifically for black and white because it was more realistic at the time. But off topic, everyone agrees that this is the great screen romance, even better than them folks in Gone With The Wind, Doctor Zhivago,Out Of Africa , It’s A Wonderful Life, Annie Hall , (here comes the punch line) Gompie version of Living Next Door To Alice, you know I’m right.

There’s no point going on about the film itself, or how its made because {A} Everything has already been said, and [B] there’s nothing bad to make fun of. That’s why I don’t review good films much because there’s nothing left to say, except if it’s a film that everyone likes but I don’t (Avatar, Titanic, anyone?). So here’s the thing about modern romance films. They do not work anymore because they follow the same formula, 1. Boy meets girl 2. Boy gets girl 3. Boy loses girl 4. Boy regains girl and they live happily ever after. Casablanca introduces the un-attainability element which makes romance impossible (Romeo and Juliet, societies fault, and Out Of Africa, Meryl Steeps fault) and when the reason makes sense (unlike the Star Wars prequels, seriously why can‘t Jedi and senators get married, Padme should have been on the prowl in those ones). Also there’s plenty of good lines and acting, particularly from Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman’s unique spin on the female in trouble idea which I like because I hate female characters like Ellen Ripley from Aliens or Sarah Connor in T2 (despite being truly great films) and female characters who do nothing like in Krull, a middle ground like here or the Maltese Falcon, weather that’s the best way to play a female character or my Oedipus Complex playing up is up for debate.

And if you have a reason why colourising films is a good idea then please mail it too 820 3332 942 0000000 or phone No. 13 Notthere Avenue, Co.Fakeson, Northern Coast of Wessex United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Snacks and the Suez Canal. And if it’s a good reason then I’ll send you a pineapple and I’ll shove in your car tailpipe for being better than me.
