If the words ''Viking film'' make you think of a silly adventure movie with lots of characters in huge helmets roaring and pulling faces at each other, then Valhalla Rising could come as a bit of a shock. It was directed by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, who made his name with brutal urban thrillers - and there's not much dialogue here, with the focus instead on amazing scenes and images that make the middle ages look weird and terrifying at the same time. The central character is One Eye, who escapes from slavery - trailed by a young boy - and ends up on a Viking ship heading for the Holy Land, which might just be going in precisely the wrong direction. It's muddy and brutal and bleak, but will also weirdly beautiful and impossible to forget.

This film has many uses of very strong bloody violence and strong language and is thereby recommended only for our very oldest FILMCLUB members.
