The second of Polish director Andrzej Wajda's WWII trilogy, following A Generation and preceding Ashes and Diamonds, Kanal is set in Warsaw in the last days of the 1944 uprising. A group of partisans, hunted by the Nazis, attempt to escape through the city's network of sewers. Waist-deep in human waste, they become disoriented in the dark but cannot surface for fear of being fired at by the Nazis. A gruelling, gloomy tale that connected with western audiences. In Polish, with English subtitles.
