Set in 1970s San Francisco, Milk is an inspiring biopic of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician to be elected in America. The film shows the shocking prejudice encountered by Milk and those who campaigned alongside him in their fight for equality. Acclaimed director Gus Van Sant creates a fascinating portrait of Milk's political and personal world, brought to life by a fantastic lead performance from Sean Penn as Milk, who deservedly won 2009's Best Actor Oscar for the role.

I really enjoyed this film as i felt it portrayed political career of Harvey Milk in a light hearted way whilst highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The audience develop an immediate connection to the characters and therefore it is easy to be drawn into the story. It is humerous but it carries a strong message that is still relevent today.

Thought the film displayed the story of his political run very well, I don't feel that it would appeal to a lot of people. I did feel that it took a long time for the actual story to kick in, apart from that it was a very good movie.

Sean Penn is known as a method actor to a degree and that is exactly how he tackles this character in the bio of Harvey Milk. I don't think it would appeal to much to people not from America as it is a story about Politics and homosexual (I am not allowed to write g*y here - not sure what Harvey Milk would have said about that!) activism in 70s San Francisco. This tragic true story is so well acted by Penn and co that you can't help but be intrigued by the character of Milk and his struggle to make his ideology and voice heard and recognised. Recommended for those thinkers out there.
