In the mid-twentieth century, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger were considered Britain's top film-making duo, and this atmospheric wartime drama is a fitting testament to their talents. As part of the British government's "back room" team, research scientist Sammy Rice (David Farrar) must figure out how to disarm a new kind of booby-trapped device dropped by German planes. But despite the best efforts of his girlfriend Susan (Kathleen Byron) Sammy's addiction to alcohol threatens to prevent him from fulfilling his patriotic duty.
