CHRISTMAS WITH A DIFFERENCE

There's a definite chill in the air at FILMCLUB – so unless someone's left the back door open again, we're thinking Christmas must be coming. And there are, of course, plenty of famous and timelessly heart-warming Christmas films out there. What would the festive season for a film lover be without It's A Wonderful Life, or Miracle on 34th Street, The Nightmare Before Christmas or Scrooge? But as film lovers ourselves, we also want to share with our members some of the lesser known Yuletide movies that are every bit as fantastic as their more celebrated peers – and to recommend some more of our favourites that might not strictly be about Christmas, but which we think in some way sum up what's great about the idea of coming together in mid-winter and huddling around... well, in our case it's huddling around a movie. So if you want to join us here with our season of Christmas movies with a difference, then just grab a mince pie and a seat and make yourself at home.

Duck Soup (U)

Running Time : 68 mins

Year Produced : 1933

Director : Leo McCarey
Cast : Groucho Marx   Harpo Marx   Chico Marx   Margaret Dumont   Zeppo Marx

All trace of reason and logic are joyfully cast aside in this wild comedy starring the much-loved 30s comics the Marx Brothers. The story begins when the totally unqualified Rufus T Firefly becomes dictator of the shambolic country of Freedonia, and is soon involved in a senseless war with next-door Sylvania - but the plot is barely relevant in a film this hilarious, where all that really matters is the constant barrage of madcap jokes that stars Groucho, Harpo and Chico joyfully deliver!

Millions (12)

Running Time : 98 mins

Year Produced : 2004

Director : Danny Boyle
Cast : Alexander Nathan Etel   James Nesbitt   Alun Armstrong   Christopher Fulford   Lewis McGibbon

Seven-year-old Damien and his nine-year-old brother Anthony have an interesting problem on their hands - a bag containing £265,000 has dropped into their lives, and with only a few days left before the British pound is replaced forever by the Euro, they only have one week to spend it, give it away, or try to return it to its owners. What the boys do with the cash, and how they feel about their sudden fortune, makes for a thought-provoking film full of hilarity, excitement and unexpected twists and turns.
