FILMCLUB FOCUS Ashutosh Gowariker and Jodhaa Akbar
Roopa Saini from the Tongues on Fire Asian Film Festival tells us why director Ashutosh Gowariker's movies Jodaa Akbar and Lagaan are essential viewing for Filmclubbers
Director Ashutosh Gowariker's films Jodhaa Akbar and Lagaan are two Bollywood treasures that are must-sees for Filmclubbers ready to uncover historical dramas from one of the world’s largest film industries.
Jodhaa Akbar takes the viewer to the greatest Mughal empire that ruled India in the 16th Century. The visually stunning sets, costumes and jewelry bring the essence and spirit of Indian royalty to life. The film follows the romance between Musilm Emporer Akbar and Hindu Princess Jodhaa (played by Bollywood superstars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai) that sets in place an alliance between two cultures and religions. When Akbar marries the beautiful princess to strengthen his power, he embarked on a journey of true love. Through conquests in the battlefield scenes to winning the love of the beautiful princess, Jodhaa Akbar imaginatively recreates the story of the mighty emperor and his romance with the defiant princess. While the film contains historically inaccurate material, it is a beautiful story of love.
Lagaan is set in the Victorian period, within the British Raj – and it’s a film that appeals to both movie fans and sports enthusiasts. The story revolves around people from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When they attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the taxes, the officers put forth a proposition: a cricket match. The villagers would have their taxes cancelled for three years if they beat the British at cricket. After accepting this proposition, the villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and playing for a result that will change their village's destiny.
At Tongue on Fire, we think both these films would make an excellent introduction to Indian cinema for any Filmclubber.
